José & Marleen's five months of culture & food
A Spanish-Dutch couple in their sixties, in love with food, wine and flamenco — happiest with a glass of manzanilla and a plan for next week.
They rent a home near Sanlúcar from October to February. The coast is home; once a month they head out for a few days to somewhere new. Here is their year.
- 1
Month 1 · October·4 daysSherry country: Jerez, El Puerto & Sanlúcar
They start on their doorstep — bodega tours, a flamenco night in a Jerez tabanco, and langostinos by the river in Sanlúcar as the sun goes down over Doñana.
- 2
Month 2 · November·4 daysSeville
An hour up the road: the cathedral and Giralda, tapas in Triana, and an evening of flamenco that ruins all other flamenco for them.
- 3
Month 3 · December·4 daysThe white villages & Ronda
A loop through Arcos, Grazalema and Vejer, ending at Ronda's clifftop bridge — woodsmoke, mountain stews and Christmas lights in the squares.
- 4
Month 4 · January·4 daysCórdoba & Granada
The Mezquita of Córdoba and the Alhambra in Granada — snow on the Sierra Nevada, and the best hot chocolate of the winter.
- 5
Month 5 · February·4 daysA tuna feast on the coast
Back on the coast for the start of the almadraba season — wild bluefin tuna in Zahara and Barbate, long lunches, and one last sherry before they fly home already planning next year.
